Gun control will not work as tactic to control violent crime anymore than DUI laws keeps people from drinking and driving. If we use the same gun control logic for drunk drivers, then why don't we limit access to cars? Drunk drivers kill and injure as many people as guns. We don't even prevent repeat offenders from owning a car - how many times has a DUI offender been caught driving on a suspended license? DUI laws/restrictions don't keep drunk drivers off the road. The laws seem only to deter citizens who are already law abiding - not criminals. Moreover, because of "gun control" most criminals act with impunity since its HIGHLY probable that their intended victims are unarmed. Criminals getting shot from citizens during the commission of crime - would seem to be a stronger deterrent than laws (laws like robbery/murder that the criminals are actually in the process of breaking anyway). The gun control argument seems to overlook the fact that lunatics and criminals don't concern themselves with what is legal. However... I do think that assault weapons like AK47s and MAC10s should be exclusively for military use. You don't "hunt" deer and bears with machine guns.("hunting" don't get me started on these animal rights groups that want to bury Michael Vick under the jail and throw paint on people that wear fur BUT have nothing to say to NRA & hunting for sport)
